History
When John P. “Jack” Gasway started a paper company in Cedar Rapids in 1935, he was selling wax paper products to large dairy, bakery and meat packaging customers. Acting as a broker for a Wisconsin paper mill, John would ride a train to call on accounts all across Iowa, northwest Illinois and southwest Wisconsin. “If he were alive today, he wouldn’t recognize the place,” said Bill Gasway, the second generation to head the family business which today is a wholesale distributor of an extensive line of products from fine printing papers and office products to janitorial and packaging supplies.
An all in family business, Bill’s wife, Harriet also became an important part of the operation, starting in the office and moving into sales. Jack passed away in 1962, several years before the company would branch into fine printing papers with the purchase of a local Cedar Rapids paper operation.
Bill and Harriet’s son, Scott, joined the family business in 1984, becoming president in 1999, and today leads a workforce of 25. Each generation has done well making changes and improvements to keep the company moving forward. When asked what has made J.P. Gasway successful for the last 85 years, Bill believes it to be the customers relationships:
“We want to partner with the customer as completely as we can. We’re here locally and we’ll bend over backwards to try to find a solution that is satisfactory for both of us.”
